Following the aptitude assessment stage
EN - FR
Description
It is a question of verifying the future adoptive parent's ability to assume parental responsibility for an adopted child and to have the capacity to care in a lasting and appropriate manner for a child who will arrive with a life experience of his or her own prior to their meeting and who will be the bearer of a very different culture, language, lifestyle and behaviour.
Aptitude is assessed differently depending on the type of adoption:
- Intercountry adoption (extra-family and intra-family): suitability is assessed by the Family Court at the beginning of the procedure.
- Internal out-of-home adoption: suitability is assessed in part by the Approved Adoption Agency, as part of the matching phase, and then by the Family Court Judge (NB. In the near future, suitability will also be assessed by the Family Court at the beginning of the procedure).
- Intra-family internal adoption: following the filing of the application for a pronouncement of adoption with the Family Court, the Judge assesses suitability and may request a social enquiry in order to make a decision. (NB. In the near future the social enquiry will be compulsory in certain cases).
Key points
In the case of international adoption, the judgment of suitability that you obtain is valid for four years from the date of its pronouncement.
